February 2010 saw the final completion of a National Lottery People’s Millions funded project at the Midland Railway – Butterley, a heritage railway and museum site in Derbyshire with an associated country park. Project funding was awarded in late 2007 following a public telephone vote. The project entailed the purchase of 6 acres of woodland, formerly the Grumblethorpe Colliery, construction of new pathways and other ecological enhancements, and construction of a new footbridge across the heritage railway line to link the woodland with the Country Park.

William Saunders latest project to have commenced work on site under our Framework Agreement with Nottinghamshire County Council is the £0.75m extension at Walkeringham School for which we are providing Structural Engineering and Quantity Surveying services. This project consists of an extensive improvement to the existing Victorian primary school with the provision of a new Foundation Unit and School Hall.

As part of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) East Midlands Regional Education Team, who’s long term goal is to try and increase the number of young people interested in pursuing a career in Civil Engineering, Peter Joyce of the Newark office has become the Lincolnshire and Rutland’s County Ambassador Co-ordinator. Peter’s new role will be to encourage regional ICE members to sign up as Ambassadors who will visit schools and take part in events that promote Civil Engineering. This scheme runs in parallel with STEMNET (Science, Technology and Mathematics Network), who also provide activities within schools for the Ambassadors to participate in. William Saunders is proud to be involved in work to stabilise and preserve the East Midlands’ oldest pit located near Bolsover in Derbyshire. Having been involved for many years in many projects such as chimney repair, re-roofing and asbestos removal William Saunders are again providing a broad range of services including Architecture, Civil and Structural Engineering, Quantity Surveying and CDM. This latest phase includes works to the remaining colliery engine houses and head gears as well as other structures which have been registered as Grade II listed buildings and are Scheduled as an Ancient Monument.

Oaklands Pool in York was completed and opened to the public just before Christmas 2009.

This project extends a long-running working relationship with the City of York Council and adds to our portfolio of other projects on this site. Recently completed are a climbing wall, gym, dance studio, reception, bar viewing galleries and a synthetic pitch refurbishment.

The design team, being led by William Saunders, have together developed an economical, functional and visually impressive building that satisfies all of the Client’s requirements for a new flagship community pool serving West York.

The scheme includes a six lane 25m swimming pool, learner pool, hydrotherapy pool and, due to its popularity, an enlargement of the recently completed gym.

Construction work has started on the new Malton School Sports Hall following intensive and prolonged discussions with the planning authority and with Ryedale District Council and the Highways Authority. The sports centre is located in the grounds of Malton School but will create sports facilities for both school and community use.

The sports hall will be used for badminton, football, basketball and volley ball and a climbing wall will be constructed to GCSE syllabus requirements. Six 16 person team changing rooms are incorporated and there will be an external floodlit multi use games area with a synthetic turf pitch which will be used for football and hockey.
