- re-use of land,
- low CO2 emissions for the operation of the building,
- provision of cycle storage and shower facilities,
- dual flush toilets and PIR controls on urinals,
- ecological diversity of the site,
- zoning of both heating and lighting,
- managing the construction process by monitoring the commissioning of systems, waste management and registration of the site under the Considerate Contractors Scheme.

Further to the Article in July's news update, the £13.5m leisure centre for which William Saunders Partnership LLP is lead Architect has significantly progressed. The glazing is expected to be installed from November and the building should be water-tight by Christmas.
The design and build contractor on this project is Bluestone. The main features of the scheme include a main pool, learner pool, steam and sauna, sports hall, fitness suite and a dance studio.
For more information on this project, please contact our Leeds office leeds@wm-saunders.co.uk.
Work on the proposed new Pavilion, London Road, Louth has begun on site. This £1.2m scheme incorporates the remodelling of the cricket and football pitches, along with the associated changing and function facilities of the new two storey club house.
The scheme is due to finish in time for the 2008-09 football season and consists of a ground floor load-bearing masonry building with a timber dormer first floor and balcony that makes an ideal viewing vantage point for the cricket season.
The Architecture for the scheme has been designed by our Nottingham Office, with the Structural design by the Newark Office and services by Sleaford Building Services. The contractor is Linpave Building Limited.
Enabling works have recently begun for the £1.4m refurbishment works at Tang Hall Primary School in York. The main features of the completed scheme will include removal of existing crosswalls to create larger open rooms, a new reception building to be of modular construction as well as a Multi Use Games Area within the existing playground.
William Saunders Partnership LLP is acting as Architect, Structural Engineer and Contract Administrator for the project. Work is expected to be complete in January 2008.
William Saunders Partnership has been heavily involved in the alterations and extension to the existing visitor centre in Danby, North Yorkshire for the North York Moors National Park Authority. Building works are now complete and the exhibition contractor is now on site.
The project included a new "showcase" which is one of the few / first buildings designed in green oak. Oak actually sourced from the National Park itself.
The result is a very environmentally friendly building as the certificate testifies!
Our Architects in Leeds and Structural Engineers in Newark have recently commenced design work on a new £5 million swimming pool extension to the existing sports facilities at Oaklands School, York.
This work extends a long-running working relationship with the City of York Council and adds to our portfolio of other projects already completed on this site. At present, the scheme design is well advanced and the whole design team is working together to develop an economical, functional and visually impressive building that satisfies all of the client's requirements. A planning application has recently been submitted.
The scheme is to include a six lane 25m swimming pool, learner pool, hydrotherapy pool and an enlargement of the gym that already forms part of the recently completed sports hall extension. The scheme also includes the provision of an entrance canopy to the existing building to make the building more welcoming to users.
The Queens Drive Leisure Centre, Liverpool
The Queens Drive Leisure Centre occupies the site of an Edwardian public baths designed by Liverpool Architect Thomas Shelmerdine in 1909. Although English Heritage and Liverpool City Council advocated re-using the existing pool it soon became apparent that in its advanced state of decay it would be necessary to destroy the building in order to save it.
The alternative was a re-evaluation of a tight site sandwiched between the Queens Drive flyover to the north, an old people's home to the south and Alsop High School to the east. The new building occupies the footprint of the original building and provides a 4-lane 25m public swimming pool, an 18 x 33m sports hall, sauna and steam facilities, a first floor fitness suite, associated changing facilities, staff welfare and changing, an office linked to the adjacent school and improved access and parking. A particular emphasis placed on the brief was robust construction and 'security by design' without resorting to a fortress response.
Externally the building uses a mixture of red brick and terracotta, grey laminate panels, cedar boarding and rendered planes. The limited colour scheme results in an understated and robust exterior, presenting a solid front to the ring road and addressing the public space and church to the west. Strategic use of glazing means that internal activities are visible from the flyover to the north and from the west elevation, animating the buildings presence during both daylight and evening hours.
Internally the rotunda forms the entrance reception, offices and main circulation and creates the focal point between the two wings of the building. From here it is possible to orientate oneself within the building by making activities visible in the first floor fitness suite, the pool hall and within the sports hall. This creates a vibrant visual experience where activity is visible in all facilities at first glance. The Client's concern for accessibility and visual clarity means that all facilities have been carefully designed with ease of use and orientation in mind.
The building replaces a well-used but dilapidated facility with an exciting update to meet requirements of the 21st Century, and provides a much-needed facility for the Walton community.
The main contractor on this project was Galliford Try. Construction started in June 2005 and the building opened to the public on the 31st March 2007 at a cost of C. £5m.

WSP's New Offices, Beacon Hill Office Park, Beacon Hill, Newark
The keys to Wm Saunders Partnership LLP's new £1 million offices were handed over on Friday 15th December 2006, and staff members immediately commenced to relocate from our former premises on Castle Gate, Newark.
This investment reflects the continuing growth of Wm Saunders Partnership LLP as a multi disciplinary Practice, offering its broad Client base improved facilities.
During all stages of the construction, members of staff have been actively encouraged to participate in all aspects of the office's layout, equipment, fixtures and fittings.
A successful in-house competition with the members of staff to choose an appropriate name for the new office building, together with suggestions for the new estate road, resulted in Shepherd Lockton House being chosen for the building name, and Cafferatta Way being chosen for the estate road, both names being ratified by the Local Authority and the local Civic Trust.
With the final coat of paint now applied, floor coverings, furniture and equipment installed, the 45 members of staff successfully relocated to the new offices in the week before Christmas.
With all systems tested and commissioned, we anticipate that in 2007, we will all be able to offer an improved and efficient service to all our clients.
Construction of our new offices commenced in April 2006, the appointed contractor being Lindum Construction of Lincoln, on a negotiated Design & Build contract.
The project was completion on time, and within the Client's budget.
