Age UK Leeds

Age UK, Leeds wished to expand their services and visibility in one City Centre location and provide extra revenue for the Charity by having a public café and an IT Suite and activity space which can be rented out to external companies.

This sensitive remodelling provides a mezzanine level withinSt. John’sParish House and creates a single double height storey extension which replaces the existing 1999 extension previously attached to the North Elevation of the original 1815 building.

The concept exposes the building’s decorative structure whilst also making full use of the buildings potential in terms of its volume. The mezzanine solution meets this requirement and minimises the structural and visual impact on the existing building.

The existing rendered extension was demolished and replaced with a modern design which is sympathetic to the Parish House, the church and the adjacent churchyard. The building is clad with cedar to mute the visual impact and make use of a natural material which over time will colour to a silvery grey reminiscent of the lead used on Church roofs.

The building has been received well and is fast becoming a welcome haven from a busy shopping trip, situated as it is in the centre of Leeds’ main shopping district.
