Biology Phase 2, University of York

This is William Saunders third completed building in a phased re-development for the University of York Biology Department, which includes the Centre for Immunology and Infection, Biomedical and Natural Science Building and Biology Phase Two.

The Biology Phase two building provides new accommodation for undergraduate, post graduate and doctorate Biology Students and replaces an existing facility. William Saunders were appointed as Lead Designer and Technical Advisers for the project.

The building is in a prominent position on campus and is highly visible from the main vehicular route through the site. It is the new face of the Biology campus, designed to successfully link to the existing Biology department.

The building brief called for a range of spaces which required careful configuration to balance the complex demands of sensitive and secure scientific operations with vibrant, innovative teaching environments. Each physical space was designed to encourage introspection of behaviour and communication between undergraduate, post graduate and doctorate students, staff members and external organisations as they engage in collaborative problem solving. Teaching space was complemented by a virtual counterpart through the comprehensive application of digital technology support.

The building is BREEAM Very Good and seeks to balance the best environmental practices with the safe operational functionality of what are technical and complex laboratory spaces.
