Centre for Immunology and Infection University of York

The £3m Centre for Immunology and Infection [CII] at the University of York provides research offices and laboratories housing approximately 150 staff and graduate research students, adjacent to the existing Immunology and Infection Unit at the Heslington West Campus.

The building enhances the profile of the University of York and helps place it at the forefront of research into immunology and disease.

The 1,885sq/m building accommodates research laboratories, academics offices, and post graduate write up areas. Internal space planning to ensure natural lighting and ventilation is sensitively managed, as areas such as laboratories, offices and write up areas which have very different environmental requirements.

The elevations are designed to reflect the highly scientific processes within the building combined with a soft, natural aesthetic using timber rain screen cladding to external walls at first and second floors. A robust blue engineering ‘plinth’ white render finish and curtain walling provide a contrasting clinical aesthetic.

The building achieved a BREEAM rating of very good, and incorporated a range of resource saving features including natural lighting, passive ventilation, solar shading, energy efficient lighting and water saving measures.

William Saunders were commissioned as architects on this project through its framework with the University and the CII joins a portfolio of work that the practice have completed on Campus.
