Older Persons’ Independent Living, Sheffield

William Saunders are pleased to be providing civil and structural engineering services on a large-scale older persons’ independent living project (OPIL) located in Birley, Sheffield.

The development comprises a large steel-framed main block up to five storeys high (see image), which has been stepped to accommodate the heavily sloping site, and five separate load-bearing masonry apartment blocks up to four storeys high, some of which are also stepped. The development comprises a mix of one and two bed apartments and contributes to Sheffield City Council’s mission to increase council housing by 3,100 homes by 2029.

This scheme forms part of a larger masterplan in Birley and also sees the extension of existing parkland and improved cross site pedestrian and cycle links whilst promoting a safe and accessible environment for new and future residents.
