Rail Freight Facility, Cricklewood

DB Cargo (UK) Ltd’s £7m Cricklewood Rail Freight Facility is now in operation, serving the construction industry in North London.

This is a project forming part of the wider Brent Cross Thameslink regeneration, and when working at full capacity is able to handle 1,500,000 tonnes of materials per annum and will save over 200 daily long distance lorry movements in and out of the capital, allowing aggregates to be brought in, and construction waste to be removed, by rail, with lorries only used for local distribution.

William Saunders provided design and project management services to the project for two years, working with the site teams, Network Rail, Barnet Council, and numerous specialist suppliers.  The project has included 1.4km of new railway, 43,000sqft of open sided canopies to allow under cover unloading and storage of aggregates, plus 700 m of 5m high acoustic fencing and 160m of 11m high acoustic ‘EcoBarrier’, a soil filled framework which is planted with ivy, honeysuckle and dog rose, and provides a high level of acoustic shielding.  400m3 of drainage attenuation has been installed, utilising vortex separators to ensure any fines are not passed on into the sewers, along with site roads, dust suppression systems, acoustic and air quality monitors, weighbridges, gatehouse and a new entrance onto the A5.
