University of Derby Sports Centre
The University of Derby commissioned William Saunders to design its new Sports Centre in 2013 following a design competition.
The concept was based on the excavation of a 9m high embankment to create a new flat site between the two existing sports pitches thereby ensuring that no facilities were lost in the construction of the new building. The centre incorporates an 8 badminton court sports hall, indoor sprint track, squash courts, climbing wall, conditioning gyms, fitness and sports science facilities.
Extensive ground remodelling allows the main entrance to be situated at the mid floor level and due to it’s position between the two pitches the building offers excellent elevated viewing and spectating in both directions. The building also incorporates a range of changing rooms to cater for the intensive pitch use and the project incorporated a new 3G rugby pitch to international playing standards.
